About the Enneagram

The Enneagram is an old personality model that sorts people into nine core motivations. It does not ask what you did; it asks why you did it. The same behavior can come from completely different motives.

The nine types fall into three centers of intelligence: the Gut center (8/9/1) acts from instinct, the Heart center (2/3/4) lives for image and feeling, and the Head center (5/6/7) meets fear with thought.

CenterTypesCore issue
Gut (instinct)8 Leader / 9 Peacemaker / 1 PerfectionistAnger and autonomy
Heart (image)2 Helper / 3 Achiever / 4 RomanticShame and identity
Head (thought)5 Observer / 6 Loyalist / 7 EnthusiastFear and security

What makes the Enneagram dynamic is that every type is connected to two arrows: in safety you grow toward your integration direction, and under pressure you slide toward your disintegration direction. The types on either side of your main type form your wing, and taking the leading type from each center gives your tritype.

When you finish, you will get a report with your nine type scores, main type analysis, wing, tritype and integration / disintegration directions. You can also complete an optional instinct subtype stage to get your dominant instinct and instinct stacking (such as sp/so).

About the Barnum effect

The Barnum effect is a psychological phenomenon named by psychologist Bertram Forer in honour of P. T. Barnum. People tend to rate vague, general personality descriptions as highly accurate when they believe the descriptions were written specifically for them — even though the same statements could apply to almost anyone. The Barnum effect explains much of the appeal of astrology, divination, personality quizzes and other widely accepted pseudosciences.

Still, these tests can be useful. Like someone who flips a coin to make a decision, what matters is what you were hoping for at the moment the coin left your hand — not the coin's answer. A test can also reveal your subconscious expectations about your own image.

So it is worth looking back at the result together with the process of answering. For a positive suggestion, recognise that it reflects what you hope for yourself, and then act on it. For a negative suggestion, recognise that it is only self-suggestion, and consciously avoid letting it shape you.
